Are you looking for a bit more adventure and speed, but really enjoy sailing a single-crew sailboat? Then a Laser or Byte is just the boat for you!
The Laser is a 14' one-design racing dinghy has a huge sail area to weight ratio, making the boat very agile and quick. This design provides a more challenging (but don't worry almost anyone can learn to sail one!) and fun sailing experience than most small dinghies! Designed in the late 60's and introduced in 1971, the boat's speed and aggressive behavior quickly made it popular with dinghy sailors all over the world.
The Byte is a small and fast sailing dinghy sailed by one person. It is basically a Laser for smaller people. The Byte is designed for sailors weighing 120 to 145 lb although most sailors weighing 90 to 160 lb should have no problems sailing this boat.

Ian Bruce put his 18 years of experience with the Laser into the development of the Byte. Just to name a couple of improvements:
the Byte has a zippered main that can be lowered at the dock without taking the mast out of the boat and a true traveler amidships that allows the boat to neatly de-power in higher wind conditions. The difference between the radial and the byte is that the boat was designed for the sail area, where the Laser Radial is a sail that is not designed for the size of the boat. This boat has a dedicated class following and is the ideal next step for students that have grown out of the Opti but are not heavy enough for a Laser, and some individuals never get heavy enough for a Laser. This is a proven (in sail training programs!), user friendly boat with all the sophistication of the modern one design sailing dinghy. This class is for male and female.

The Byte sailboat is a fast and fun singlehanded one-design dinghy. It was designed to be an affordable performance boat that could cater to sailors of a greater weight range than other boats in its category. Byte sailboats provide an all-important first step for young sailors outgrowing the Optimist. The controls for vang, outhaul, and cunningham are all led to either side of the boat's deck with multi-purchase, ball bearing block systems. The vang can be adjusted, on a full plane, from the cockpit. The Byte can be upgraded with a Byte CII carbon fiber mast and mylar sail as the sailor progresses and desires a higher performance boat.
